There is no denying that Sunday’s inaugural HBF Run for a Reason presented by The West Australian was a stand out success.
The aim was to attract 7,500 participants but despite the somewhat dark and gloomy skies, people showed up to the WACA in their thousands, 10,450 in fact.
HBF Managing Director, Rob Bransby said the support from the community had been overwhelming.
“To have these sorts of numbers for the first year proves that West Australians truly do have so many ‘Reasons’ to be a part of this event”.
Those Reasons ranged from improving health and fitness and having fun to some very heartfelt tributes to loved ones lost to chronic disease.
The fundraising tally smashed the target of $200,000 before the weekend, it currently sits at around $225,000 and continues to climb as donations can be made for the next 28 days.
“The big winners from this event are the six charities who will be able to use the funds for research and support of victims affected by these chronic illnesses,” said Mr Bransby.
The charities supported were Arthritis WA, Asthma Foundation WA, Cancer Council WA, Diabetes WA, Heart Foundation WA and Lifeline WA.
The other winners on the day were Courtney Carter, who was the first male to cross the Act-Belong-Commit 14km finish line and Samantha Flanders who was the first female.
Sam Mcentee and Mathilda Connell were the first place winners of the Act-Belong-Commit 4.5km course.
HBF hopes that the event will become a permanent fixture on the WA calendar so be sure to mark Sunday, 22 May 2011 in your diary for the next HBF Run for a Reason.
