How to Claim

As you may know, private hospital insurance covers most of your baby's birth. On average, you might find yourself claiming around $7,000 - but in some cases if special neo-natal care is needed it could even be closer to $20,000.

Doctors and Hospital Bills

Doctors and hospitals bill separately, so you'll usually find that you get a few separate bills. As a general rule, most doctors send their bills directly to us and we'll liaise with Medicare and pay the combined HBF and Medicare benefit to the doctor. If there is a gap, the doctor will then send out a separate bill directly to you.

The hospital will also bill us directly for things like accommodation and theatre fees. There aren't usually gaps for theatre fees for maternity stays.

You'll also have costs for your obstetrician visits and ultrasounds before the birth. These are just like your normal doctor's bills, so you just claim directly through Medicare. This is because legislatively, private health insurers can only cover medical treatment you receive when you're admitted to a hospital as a patient.

The Billing Process

The billing process does sometimes vary. For more information you can read Your hospital stay, call us before you go into hospital or ask your HBF Hospital Liaison Officer if you get a visit in hospital.
