There are plenty of reasons to get moving

We’re doing it again! Join the thousands of West Australians who were pioneers in the first HBF Run for a Reason, presented by The West Australian, when the event kicks off again on Sunday 22 May, 2011.

Need a reason to get moving? Consider that 40% of adults are not getting the recommended levels of exercise and 60% are currently overweight or obese.

Still not convinced? How about the fact that 80% of all deaths are caused by chronic disease that are preventable through lifestyle changes, including increased physical activity.

We’re giving you plenty of notice so you can tie up your sneakers (or maybe buy a new pair) and step towards better health.

The now-annual event hopes to again attract thousands of runners, walkers, joggers, wheelies and strollers who will all ‘choose their Reason’ for pulling on their running shoes.

This all-ages community event offers something for almost everyone, with the choice of either the Act-Belong-Commit 4.5km or the more challenging 14km course. Both will start and finish at the WACA.

Throughout the course, you’ll be treated to a spectacular street-level perspective of Perth’s CBD. The 14km course includes three freeways and a chance to travel through the Northbridge Tunnel on foot. And everyone will enjoy the rare opportunity to run
onto the grounds of the WACA across the finish line.

You’ll not only help yourself by committing to the HBF Run for a Reason, but you could also help save lives. Fundraise for the event and the money will go to one of the six chronic disease charity partners – Arthritis WA, Asthma Foundation WA, Cancer Council WA, Diabetes WA, Heart Foundation WA and Lifeline. Over $255,000 was raised in 2010 and hopefully we’ll be able to raise even more in 2011.

HBF Managing Director Rob Bransby says there was so much support and enthusiasm for the HBF Run for a Reason that it was immediately clear it should become an annual event. He says it also complements the State’s largest health insurer’s vision in leading the way to improving the health and well-being of all West Australians.

“We know that physical activity is crucial in preventing and managing many chronic health issues, so we are encouraging everyone to get moving, not just for the HBF Run for a Reason but before that too,” says Mr Bransby.

“It’s the perfect excuse to change some habits now and make exercise part of your every day.”
