Putting our members’ health first since 1941

With over one million members, we’ve been making healthy happen for over 75 years.

We’re Western Australia’s largest health insurer and one of the nation’s major not-for-profit health funds. We’re set up differently from most other insurers—our focus is on our members, not shareholders.

We’re here to make a difference—not a profit.

We understand the health system and what it takes to be healthy in a complex world. We provide affordable and quality health insurance cover for our members. We return 90 cents in every premium dollar to our members as benefits and rebates.

Well-being beyond health insurance

HBF members have access to a range of discounts and free health services to help you live a healthier, happier life.

Our WA network of franchised Friendlies pharmacies provide valuable health services such as flu vaccinations and health checks.

We help members to become more physically active by providing discounts at gyms, HBF Stadium and HBF Arena. HBF Members can also attend professionally run, HBF Fitness classes for free in Perth and regional centres.

Our flagship event, HBF Run for a Reason, has grown to be Western Australia’s most popular community walking and running event and has raised over $8 million for WA health charities since 2010.


Our history

HBF began in April 1941 as the Metropolitan Hospital Benefit Fund to help West Australians cover the cost of hospital treatment.

As our coverage gradually extended to all West Australian hospitals, we lost the word ‘metropolitan’ to become the Hospital Benefit Fund.

In the 1970s, we opened regional branches in Albany, Collie, Geraldton and Katanning.

In March 2000, we shortened our name to HBF.

Today we're proud to be WA's leading health insurer and one of the leading providers of home, car and travel insurance. While a lot has changed since our inception, our focus remains the same—serving our members.


Best experience possible

Our promise is to deliver the best experience possible for our members. We are committed to providing high quality service and solutions.

According to the latest State of the Health Funds report, by the Private Health Insurance Ombudsman:

  • Our members are happier – no other major fund has fewer complaints made to PHIO compared to their market share. We account for just 3.3% of complaints which is substantially less than our market share of 8%.
  • We cover more of the hospital and dental bill (on average, in WA) than any other health fund.
  • We return 90% of premiums as benefits, more than the industry average of 87.5%
