Major dental & Implants

Covers complex treatments that involve repairing or replacing teeth. Includes services like:

Crowns

A cover or “cap” that is placed over a damaged tooth. May also be used to improve a tooth's appearance, shape or alignment.
Bridges

Used to replace a missing tooth with a false tooth. The bridge is attached to the teeth or implants on either side of the missing tooth.
Endodontics

Treats the pulp tissue in the tooth and the tissue surrounding the roots of a tooth. Treatment may include a root canal.
Implants

Replace a missing tooth by placing an implant into the jawbone. A crown is attached to make the implant look like your other teeth.

Orthodontic treatment has a lifetime limit. This is the maximum amount you can claim over the course of your life. In determining if you have reached the lifetime limit for your product, we consider the amount you have claimed from HBF and any other health funds.

How does it work?

Sign up online
Once you have picked an extras product that covers the dental services you need, you can sign up online in just a few minutes or contact us.
Serve any applicable waiting periods
If you are new to private health insurance, you may need to serve waiting periods. If you are switching from another policy or fund, waiting periods may apply so please contact us before starting treatment.
Check your benefits and limits
You can check your dental benefits and annual limits by logging into myHBF. You can see your annual limits at any time, but you will need to know the dental item numbers and fees to complete a benefit quote. You can get item numbers and fees by speaking with your dentist.
Book an appointment
You can book a dental appointment at any dentist that is an approved provider with HBF. To get 100% back on a scale and clean you will need to book an appointment with a Member Plus dentist be on an eligible level of extras cover and have served any waiting periods.

Each year, eligible members can receive 100% back¹ on your first scale and clean at a dentist within our Member Plus network.

Depending on the product you hold, HBF also covers between 75% and 100% of the agreed fee for other Preventative dental services at Member Plus dentists. Find a provider

Dental Insurance FAQs

This will depend on which level of cover you have and the dental service being provided. After you get a treatment plan from your dentist with the dental item numbers to be provided, give us a call to complete a benefit quote so you know exactly what benefits you are entitled to. Please note that waiting periods and annual limits may apply.

You’ll generally be able to claim electronically at your dentist. Swipe your HBF member card when you pay, and we will pay the provider directly, on the spot. All you will need to pay is the “gap”, which is the difference between what your dentist charges and the benefit that HBF pays to your dentist on your behalf.

Alternatively, you can pay the dentist upfront and submit your accounts and receipts to HBF by one of the following methods:

Yes, eligible members can get 100% back on your first scale and clean each calendar year as long as:

You have preventive dental on your eligible extras cover
You have served your 2-month waiting period
Your treatment is performed by a Member Plus provider

Keep in mind these are limited to one per member per calendar year. You can get a benefit for a follow up scale and clean within the same calendar year, but the benefits will depend on your level of cover and annual limits.

School dental programs, funded by the State Government, typically provide general dental treatments but do not include major dental treatments likes crowns, endodontic treatment or braces.

If you don't have Extras cover, and your kids need dental treatment not funded by the State Government, you will have to cover the full cost of these treatments.

This will depend on where the surgical extraction is taking place.

After you get a treatment plan from your dentist or oral surgeon with all the dental item numbers to be provided, give us a call to complete a benefit quote so you know exactly what benefits you are entitled to.

If your extraction is taking place at the dental practice, you will not need hospital insurance – all applicable benefits will be paid from your Extras cover. However, if your extraction takes place at a hospital, you will need to have Hospital cover in order to claim benefits for accommodation and theatre costs.
