Cashbacks are making a comeback

We’re passing on COVID-19 savings to members. It’s the not-for-profit way.

HBF promised not to financially benefit from the pandemic, that’s why we’re returning savings from reduced claiming to our members. It’s the not-for-profit way!

Starting from June, HBF will be returning almost $110 million to members, bringing our total COVID-19 support package to more than $255 million.

COVID-19 payment FAQs

Why are you returning money to members?

HBF promised not to financially benefit from the COVID-19 pandemic.

We promised that if we recorded any savings because members couldn’t use their health cover due to the temporary suspension of elective surgery procedures and Extras services, that this money would be returned to eligible members.

With claims stabilising, HBF identified a portion of funds that were not utilised and will be returning $110 million back to members. This takes our total COVID-19 support provided by HBF to our members to $225 million.

Payments will commence in June 2023 to all eligible members.

How much money will I receive?

HBF will pay between $45 and $330 per eligible policy. The payment amount will depend on the membership type (e.g. Single, Parent Plus, Couple or Family), and the type of cover (e.g. Hospital and/or Extras) held on 1 March 2023.

If I’m eligible to receive a payment, how will I receive the funds?

If we have your up-to-date bank account details for receiving benefit payments, you'll receive a direct credit into this bank account.

If we don’t have your bank account details, we will need these to make the payment.

You can update your details in the HBF App or by logging into myHBF.

Steps on how to update your bank details

Note: HBF no longer makes cheque payments.

Am I eligible to receive the payment?

Current HBF policyholders who held a Hospital and/or Extras policy on 1 March 2023 and remain with HBF when payments are made will be eligible to receive this payment.

Payments will be made from June 2023.

Will each person on the policy receive a payment?

No, we will send one payment to the policyholder covering all members on the policy.

When will I get the payment?

HBF will make payments to eligible policyholders from June 2023.

We will require your direct credit details to make the payment into your bank account and will notify you via email or letter to confirm that we have made the deposit.

You can update your bank account details in the HBF App or by logging into myHBF.

Note: HBF no longer makes cheque payments.

My partner and I had our own policies on 1 March 2023, but we have since moved to a joint couples/family policy. Will we receive a payment each?

Yes, if you had separate singles cover on 1 March but are now on a couples/family policy with HBF at the time of payment, you will both receive a cashback. The amount you each receive will be based on whether you held Hospital and/or Extras cover at the time.

Why do I need to have held a policy on 1 March 2023 to be eligible?

To keep the eligibility criteria and dates for receiving a cashback payment straightforward, HBF is only looking at the membership and cover type held on 1 March 2023. The single date for determining cover eligibility is simple and means we’re able to return the surplus funds to members in a timely manner.

How was the payment for my policy calculated?

HBF estimated a deferred claims provision totalling $110 million relating to Hospital and Extras services members could not access while COVID-19 control measures were in place but were expected to be claimed at a later date.

Now that claims have normalised, HBF has a balance of $110 million that we will be returning to almost half a million policyholders who held cover on 1 March 2023.

To calculate the amount payable to each eligible policy, HBF considered the following:

  • the total amount to be disbursed,
  • the total number of policies eligible to receive a payment,
  • membership type (Single, Parent Plus, Couple, Family) on each policy, and
  • the type of cover (Hospital and/or Extras) held on each policy.

Based on the considerations noted above, HBF will be making a payment of between $45 and $330 per policy.

I have top level Hospital and Extras cover; do I get more money back?

No. The level of cover held is not a factor we used in determining the amount payable to each individual policy. The amount you will receive depends on your membership type (Single, Parent Plus, Couple, Family) and the type of cover (Hospital and/or Extras) you held on 1 March 2023.

Will this payment affect my health insurance rebate or taxable income?

This payment is in lieu of health insurance benefits that members could have claimed; it is not a refund of health insurance premiums that members paid, so it does not change the health insurance premium that you can claim a rebate on.

As this payment is in lieu of health insurance benefits that members could have claimed, it is not taxable income.

Can my money just be put against my health insurance premium as a payment, or be donated to my nominated charity?

No, HBF will send your payment via direct credit. You can then use the money how you like, including paying your health insurance premiums or donating it if you wish.

Our members have told us in surveys that they would prefer the simplicity of having any COVID-19 savings paid directly into their bank accounts, which is why we are sending these payments directly into eligible members’ bank accounts.

My premiums have gone up this year, why couldn’t you use this money to just keep them the same?

Premium increases are to ensure we can pay future claims. This year’s premium increase covers claims for the period starting 1 April 2023.

This payment is from claims funds that were not utilised due to the temporary suspension of elective surgery procedures and Extras services.
