Emergency assistance when you need it
  • Emergency assistance is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • If you need assistance while in Australia please call 02 8895 0699.
  • If you need assistance while overseas please call reverse charge, via the local operator, +61 2 8895 0699.
Pre-existing medical conditions

You can apply to have your pre-existing medical condition covered. In most cases we can assess your application to cover a pre-existing medical condition over the phone or online without the need to fill out any forms or to see your doctor.

There are some pre-existing medical conditions that we will cover you for automatically, provided you have no other related pre-existing medical conditions. You will need to refer to the HBF Travel PDS for information on the pre-existing medical conditions that we automatically cover.

Why do I need travel insurance?

Travel insurance covers you and your family during holidays for a variety of insured events. You may need to cancel your journey, your personal belongings could be lost, stolen or damaged, and most importantly, an overseas medical emergency could occur.

HBF has an international support network for you to call on in the event of an emergency.

How do I decide which travel insurance plan to select?
When completing a quote for travel insurance you’ll be asked where you’ll be travelling to. The applicable travel plan will then be automatically selected based on this information. You also have the option to purchase a higher travel plan than your destination region if you wish to be covered for a higher limit of cover. 
Does my travel policy cover all my luggage and personal belongings?

Your luggage is covered under your policy, but if you don’t take all reasonable precautions to protect it, your claim may be refused. This means taking the necessary steps to avoid any loss and damage, and ensuring you never leave it unsupervised. It’s important to note that individual item and policy limits may apply so please refer to the HBF Travel PDS for full terms and conditions and item/policy limits.

Who do I contact in the event of an emergency?

HBF employ the services of First Assistance to provide 24/7 support to HBF policy holders, prior and during your journey. First Assistance can help you prepare for your journey with pre-travel assistance information such as essential contacts, visa information and vaccination recommendations.

When travelling they can also help with emergency medical assistance, lost luggage and document support, emergency travel and accommodation services, legal referrals and emergency message transmission to relatives.

In what instance will my premium be refunded?

We will refund your policy if you advise us within 21 days of receiving your policy that you:

  • Are not satisfied with it
  • Have not made a claim
  • Have not started your journey

If you cancel after the 21-day cooling-off period you can cancel the policy at any time for a refund of the unused premium, less the applicable administration fee. Please refer to the Travel PDS for details.

Extending your travel insurance policy
We’ll happily extend your international cover if you contact us to arrange the extension before your original policy ends. We will not provide cover on an extension for any pre-existing medical or dental condition.
