Overseas Visitors Cover FAQS

What is Overseas Visitors Health Cover?

Overseas Visitors Health Cover (OVHC) is designed to help cover the costs of hospital and medical treatments for people who visit Australia and are not entitled to Medicare benefits. It helps cover the cost of doctors, anaesthetists, and medical fees, as well as other costs such as hospital accommodation, theatre fees, and pharmacy prescriptions.

With OVHC, you can go to a private hospital for treatment, and choose your own specialist and time of treatment whilst you visit Australia. Depending on your visa type and what cover you choose, our Working Visa Hospital products meet the Department of Home Affairs condition 8501.

What is covered on Overseas Visitors Health Cover?

OVHC helps cover the cost of ‘inpatient’ services – these are treatments you receive when you’re formally admitted to the hospital for care, e.g surgery.

Depending on the cover you choose, OVHC can also cover ‘outpatient’ services – these are treatments you receive when you haven't been formally admitted to hospital, for example, tests and examinations (like a GP visit, x-rays or blood tests)

What is not covered by Overseas Visitors Health Cover?

Depending on which OVHC you choose ‘outpatient’ services may not be included. You may also have exclusions and/or restrictions. If a service is excluded, it’s not covered at all. Restricted services receive the minimum default benefit, which generally means a large out-of-pocket.

How much will I get back?

Where your treatment is an included service on your hospital cover, your hospital cost will either be fully covered or partially covered depending on the type of agreement your health fund as with your specialists and hospital. With HBF, when you’re admitted to hospital for treatment you will get 100% back for the cost of your hospital accommodation and specialists so long as you choose providers that have ‘no-gap’ (otherwise known as ‘fully covered’) agreements.

Just be aware of out-of-pocket costs, which can include excess or co-payments, as well any outpatient services if your chosen product doesn't cover these. If your cover includes treatment for outpatient services, benefits vary between 85% to 100% of the Medicare benefit Schedule, depending on which level of cover you choose.
