Beetroot dip and hummus dip with healthy green salad and olive oil

You won’t believe how easy it is to whip up these colourful homemade dips. The Good Grocer IGA shows us how.

Homemade dips are a fantastic trick to have up your sleeve – perfect for snacking on with veggie sticks or wholegrain crackers, using as a spread, or swirling through salads.

Here are a few simple flavour combinations to try. All you need is a blender or a food processor to blitz them up.

1. Spinach and ricotta dip

To make this creamy favourite, simply blend up:

  • 1 ½ cups baby spinach
  • 200 g ricotta
  • A tablespoon of Greek yoghurt
  • A generous grating of Parmesan cheese
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • A drizzle of olive oil

2. Hummus dip

There are lots of variations to play with, but you can make a basic hummus by blending:

  • 1 can chickpeas (rinsed)
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1 tablespoon tahini
  • Zest and juice of one lemon

You can also try adding spices like cumin, coriander or paprika for a flavour twist. Add water if needed to get the perfect consistency.

3. Tzatziki dip

For this refreshing and creamy dip, add to the blender:

  • 1 large cucumber, peeled and diced
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 1 cup Greek yoghurt

4. Beetroot dip

The vibrant pink colour of this beetroot dip gives it instant appeal, so it can be a great way to encourage kids to eat more veggies.

Simply blitz up:

  • 1 can baby beetroot (drained)
  • 1 cup natural yoghurt
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

You can try adding nuts like almonds or pine nuts, or spices like cumin, coriander and paprika.

Lunchbox hack

These dips can make a great snack, and there’s an easy way to take them to work or school:

  1. After blending up any of these dips, pour them into ice cube trays and freeze them.
  2. In the morning, add one or two cubes of frozen dip to a container where they will slowly defrost by lunchtime.
  3. Pop some vegetable sticks or crackers in your lunchbox, and you’ve got a delicious, ready-to-go snack!
