Professor Hugh Dawkins, Director of the Office of Population Health Genomics, Public and Aboriginal Health, and a highly
respected figure in health policy development, will become HBF’s first Chief Health Adviser at the end of 2018.
Professor Dawkins’ new role was announced by HBF CEO John Van Der Wielen, who said the appointment meant HBF would be drawing
on the best contemporary expertise in managing its business and setting its future strategy.
“Professor Dawkins is recognised nationally and internationally for his contribution to health policy. I’m delighted that
we’ll be able to tap into this expertise as we shape HBF’s future,” Mr Van Der Wielen said.
Professor Dawkins is an expert in health and in health-related community issues and has served in leadership roles in the
Office of Population Health Genomics, Public and Aboriginal Health, for 16 years.
Professor Dawkins has extensive experience in developing and implementing health policy and a strong record of turning research
and new knowledge into health outcomes.
He is an adviser to Government on a wide range of health issues through the Australian Health Ministers’ Advisory Council
(AHMAC).
Professor Dawkins’ responsibilities in HBF will include serving as a Director on the Friendlies Pharmacy Board and advising
on the preventative health services provided to HBF members by Friendlies pharmacies.
He will provide expert advice relating to individual health insurance claims, including for medical items that would not
normally be covered.
Professor Dawkins will have a key role in shaping HBF’s future strategy, advising HBF’s senior executives on areas where
HBF could make a positive difference to the health of HBF’s members.
Professor Dawkins said he was excited to be joining HBF’s executive and was looking forward to working with an outstanding
team to explore new opportunities to improve the health journey for all HBF members.
