More than 33,100 runners, walkers and wheelers have crossed the finish line at Gloucester Park as HBF Run for a Reason returned for the first time since 2019.

“We were fortunate to have clear skies and cool temperatures today – ideal conditions whether you were doing the 4km, 12km or Half Marathon,” HBF Chief Executive Officer Dr Lachlan Henderson said.

“Seeing the community come together like this has been remarkable, and it becomes even more meaningful hearing the heartfelt reasons why some of our participants entered.

“People seemed delighted to be out running at this event once again, with the energy at the start and finish lines incredible.”

More than $1.14 million has been raised so far for 229 charities – and the fundraising continues online via hbfrun.com.au until 23 June.

“We’re grateful to everyone who has donated so far – every cent supports the vital work of these non-profit organisations in multiple ways,” Dr Henderson said.

The Brooks Half Marathon sold out, with 4,550 entries – 1,000 more than the 2019 event.

Jackets, jumpers, coats, and other items of clothing discarded by entrants at the start line for Vinnies to distribute are estimated to weigh two tonnes.

Nearly 800 volunteers helped with pack collection, bag drop, ensuring entrants stayed hydrated on course, directing entrants and spectators, managing the start and finish lines, and helping with medal presentations.

Between HBF Run for a Reason’s inception in 2010 and until the event was last held in 2019, more than $10.2 million has been raised for charity, with 274,242 entrants. The event was not held in 2020, 2021, and 2022 due to COVID-restrictions.
