Living with knee and hip osteoarthritis can be challenging. That’s why HBF is offering eligible members* access to an evidence-based program with promising results. Delivered in partnership with HBF Phyiso and other approved program providers, the GLA:D® Program; is designed to reduce pain, improve strength and help you move more confidently.

Fully covered for eligible HBF members*

Eligible members can access the program at no additional cost when delivered by a participating HBF Physio or other approved program provider clinic.

Proven 33% reduction in pain intensity2

On average, participants experienced a reduction in pain of 33% after completing the program. There was also an average improvement in joint-related quality of life of 31% for participants with knee osteoarthritis, with 47% of these participants also reporting a reduction in use of pain relief medication.

Applied to everyday activities - enhancing success

Participants are provided education and given exercises that are suitable and practical for everyday application.

Group sessions with physiotherapists or exercise physiologists

12 group exercise classes, 2 education sessions and follow up to help participants manage symptoms and develop long term healthy habits.

Aligned to national and international clinical guidelines for osteoarthritis treatment

How to get started

  1. Consult with your treating physiotherapist, specialist, or GP about your suitability for the program.

  2. Understand if you are eligible

    Eligible members can participate in this program at no extra cost.^ To be eligible you must

    • Be 18 years or older
    • Be currently managing osteoarthritis in your knee or hip~
    • Have held hospital cover that includes cover for joint replacement for at least 2 months
    • Have not previously enrolled in the GLA:D® Program funded by HBF
    • Call HBF on 133 423 to check your level of cover
  3. Find a participating clinic and book your first assessment online, either with HBF Physio or another approved program provider.

How do I know if I am eligible for the program?

To be eligible for the fully covered^ program you must:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Be currently managing osteoarthritis in your knee or hip
  • Have held hospital cover that includes cover for joint replacement for at least 2 months
  • Have not previously enrolled in the GLA:D® Program funded by HBF
  • Call HBF on 133 423 to check your level of cover

How will I benefit?

This program is unique in that the education and exercises provided can be applied to everyday activities. By strengthening and correcting daily movement patterns, participants will train their bodies to move well, prevent symptom progression and reduce pain.

GLA:D® participants also reported high levels of satisfaction with the program and increased levels of physical activity 12 months after starting the program.

What is involved if I do participate?

After enrolling in the program at a participating clinic, you will have a one-on-one assessment. Over the next 6 weeks you will attend 12 exercise sessions (two per week), plus two education sessions. You will finish with another one-on-one assessment with your physiotherapist or exercise physiologist to measure your progress.

What is the cost?

For members holding eligible level of hospital cover* the program is available at no extra cost when delivered by a trained HBF Physio or other approved program provider physiotherapist^.
