Find cover by visa type

HBF provides Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC) for a range of eligible visa categories. If your visa subclass is not listed, it may not be an eligible visa for OVHC purposes.

Student visas: Unfortunately we do not offer any cover for visas 500, 580 and 590 at this time.

Working visas issued in Australia allow temporary visa holders to undertake short-term, highly specialised, non-ongoing work which is an important part of the Australian workforce. All of these visas include condition 8501 which require holders to obtain and maintain adequate private health cover for the entire duration of their stay in Australia to help cover medical costs if you get sick or injured or need medical help.

Working holiday visas allow holders to work while on holiday in Australia. The aim of these visas is to exchange cultural values, knowledge and skills, while visa holders experience what Australia has to offer. Working holiday makers can work full time in Australia, but for a maximum set period with each employer.

These visas include condition 8501 which require holders to obtain and maintain adequate private health cover for the entire duration of their stay in Australia.

  • 417 Working Holiday
  • 462 Work and Holiday

Visitor visas are granted to people who visit Australia on holiday, visiting friends and family, social or recreational reasons, or other short-term non-work visits. There are various types of visas available for visiting Australia which reflect the length of stay, nationality, current location and the purpose of the visit. Visitor visa holders have limited work rights in Australia. Holders can attend business meetings and undergo short training courses, but cannot work for an Australian employer.

While these visas do not contain condition 8501, it may be a good idea to get OVHC with HBF, especially if you’re visiting from a country that doesn’t have a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia.

Bridging visas are temporary visas that are granted while a substantive visa application is being processed. Depending on the bridging visa, you may or may not be able to return to Australia if you leave the country whilst you are waiting for your substantive visa to be approved. Bridging visas vary in terms of work rights - some are granted with full work rights, whereas others require evidence of financial hardship.

  • 010 Bridging Visa A (BVA)
  • 020 Bridging Visa B (BVB)
  • 030 Bridging Visa C (BVC)

If you’re on a bridging visa, you should generally remain on Overseas Visitor Health Cover (OVHC) while your visa status is being finalised.

In most cases, you’ll need to keep OVHC until you’re eligible for Medicare and have received your green Medicare card. OVHC can help you meet visa condition 8501 (adequate health insurance) during this period. Once you become eligible for Medicare and receive confirmation (such as your green Medicare card), you can then apply to move to a resident health insurance product.

Important:

Medicare eligibility depends on your visa type and individual circumstances. We recommend confirming your eligibility directly with Services Australia (Medicare) before changing or cancelling your cover.

If you cannot find your visa number, please contact one of our friendly team by calling 133 423 (+61 8 9265 6111 if you’re overseas) or request a call back.

Visas we don’t cover are student visas 500, 580 and 590.
