4 unexpected ways extras cover can support your mental health

Here’s how HBF extras cover can help support your mental health.
Complete 60 is a comprehensive extras cover that includes all 22 HBF extras services. It pays 60% or more back on services including general and major dental, orthodontics, hearing aids, optical, physiotherapy, psychology and appliances, up to annual limits. Complete 60 is designed for people who want broad, predictable extras cover across most healthcare needs without exclusions.
Health insurance (also called health cover) can help with the cost of healthcare in Australia. It generally includes hospital cover, which contributes towards costs if you’re admitted to hospital (such as doctor’s fees and accommodation), and extras cover, which can help reduce the cost of everyday services like dental, physiotherapy and optical (services that are often not fully covered by Medicare). Depending on your needs, you can choose hospital cover, extras cover or combine both in one policy.

An annual limit is the maximum amount of money you can claim for a service within a calendar year. Each person on your policy has their own annual limits.

A lifetime limit is the total amount you can claim for a service over the course of your lifetime; each person on your policy has their own lifetime limit. At HBF, lifetime limits only apply to orthodontics on select covers. This means that once you've claimed up to your lifetime limit, either at HBF or through claims at another health insurer, you won't be able to claim benefits again even if you change your cover or leave and re-join us in the future.

The amount you can claim back on extras services depends on your benefits (the amount you get back when you claim) and your annual limits (the maximum amount you can claim in a year).

Nearly all extras insurance policies only cover services to a limited extent, which means you'll usually pay for some of the service out of your own pocket.

What makes extras insurance worthwhile is that Medicare generally doesn't cover extras services, so without extras insurance you'd have to cover the full cost of treatment every time you receive a service.

The specific extras services you're covered for depends on your health fund, level of cover and the specific policy you choose. Here are some examples of common services extras insurance can cover:

Extras insurance (also called extras cover or ancillary cover) helps cover the cost of everyday healthcare services in Australia, such as dental, physiotherapy and optical. These services are generally not covered by Medicare.

Private health insurance cannot pay for out-of-hospital medical services like GP visits, specialist consultations, scans, blood tests or eye exams. These are typically covered by Medicare instead, as health funds are not permitted to pay benefits for these services.
