Hospitalised overseas

Mark and his wife travelled to Thailand, where they rented scooters to ride around the streets of Phuket. While riding one afternoon, Mark, who has an Australian motorcycle licence, went to adjust his rear view mirror to check on his wife and when he looked up there was a concrete ditch which he collided into. He suffered injuries to his ribs, hip and left shoulder that required surgery. Two weeks later, he was flown back home to Royal Perth Hospital with his wife and a medical escort.

With HBF, Mark avoided having to pay approximately $11,900 in medical, repatriation and additional expenses.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why do I need travel insurance?

Travel insurance covers you and your family during holidays for a variety of insured events. You may need to cancel your journey, your personal belongings could be lost, stolen or damaged, and most importantly, an overseas medical emergency could occur. HBF has an international support network for you to call on in the event of an emergency.

  • I have credit card travel insurance. Isn’t that enough?

More flexibility, higher level of cover and lower excess are a few things that make HBF travel insurance more practical than complimentary credit card policies.

Cover provided by credit card travel insurance provides varying levels of cover and may include additional conditions you need to meet in order to qualify for cover. Credit card travel insurance may cap the amount of cover for on medical expenses, limit travel time (less than 3 months), excludes skiing and other adventure sports and may not cover pre-existing medical conditions.

It is important you check the cover provided to ensure it is right for you.

  • If I change my mind and cancel the policy, do I get a refund?

HBF travel insurance provides a 21-day cooling off period to give you time to ensure that you have chosen the best policy you need. If you cancel the policy within 21 days and you have not started your journey or made a claim in that time, we will refund your policy. Please refer to the HBF Travel PDS for details.

  • When should I purchase my travel insurance?

We recommend you buy your travel insurance as soon as you’ve paid for your trip. That way you’ll be covered for any cancellations or loss should your plans change.

  • How do I save on travel insurance by increasing my excess?

An 'excess' is the amount you need to contribute if you need to make a claim. You have the flexibility to choose to increase your excess to reduce the cost of your travel insurance premium and save!

  • Are my pre-existing medical conditions covered?

You can apply to have your pre-existing medical condition covered. In most cases we can assess your application to cover a pre-existing medical condition over the phone or online without the need to fill out any forms or to see your doctor.

There are some pre-existing medical conditions that we will cover you for automatically. Please refer to the HBF Travel PDS for more information.
