Frequently asked questions
What does extras insurance cover?
The specific extras services you're covered for depends on your health fund, level of cover and the specific policy you choose. Here are some examples of common services extras insurance can cover:
- Dental treatment — this includes preventative dental, general restorative dental, major dental and implants, and orthodontics
- Physiotherapy
- Optical - glasses and contact lenses
- Chiropractic treatment
- Podiatry
What are the waiting periods on extras cover?
Waiting periods for extras vary between health funds, but with HBF most services have a two-month waiting period, while more high-cost services (like major dental) have a waiting period of 12 months or more.
What happens to my annual limits if I switch to HBF?
If you're switching to HBF from another health fund and you've already claimed some of your benefits in the same calendar year, any claims you have made with your previous fund this calendar year will result in an adjustment of the annual limit you can claim with us for the rest of the year. For example, if you have claimed $300 on Exercise Physiology with your current fund and you join HBF on Top 70, which has a combined annual limit of $600 with Physiotherapy, you may be able to claim $300 with us this calendar year provided you haven’t also made a claim for Physiotherapy services. Annual limits reset on 1 January each year.
If your new HBF cover has a service with a lifetime limit, we will take into account all claims you have made for that service previously, regardless of the year they were made.
