How does it work?
Sign up online
Once you have picked an extras product that provides the right level of cover for you, you can sign up online in just a few minutes or contact us to discuss your cover options.
Serve any applicable waiting periods
If you are new to private health insurance, you may need to serve waiting periods. If you are changing your level of cover or switching from another fund, waiting periods may apply so please contact us before buying your glasses or contacts.
Check your benefits and limits and get a quote
You can check your optical benefits and annual limits by logging into myHBF. You can see your annual limits at any time, but you will need to know the item numbers and fees before calling us on 133 423 to get a benefit quote. You can get item numbers and fees by speaking with your optometrist.

Get your glasses fully covered
HBF’s Member Plus optical arrangement gives members access to a wide selection of fully covered glasses from the no-gap range. If you require single vision, bifocal, multifocal or progressive lenses and you select frames from the no-gap range, your glasses will be fully covered* up to your annual limit.

How much can I get back on optical?
The amount you get back when you claim on optical will depend on your level of cover (including any annual limits) and the glasses/contacts that you purchase.
With all HBF Extras covers currently available for sale, you can get 100% back on the cost of your glasses or contacts, up to your annual limit*. If your glasses or contacts cost more than your available annual limit, you'll just need to pay the difference (this is called an out-of-pocket). For example, if your glasses cost $250 and you have an unused $200 annual limit, you will have to pay $50 out-of-pocket. If your glasses cost $200 and you have an unused $200 annual limit, you won't have to pay anything.
If you have eligible HBF extras cover, you can get a fully covered* pair of glasses when you choose a pair from the 'no gap range' at an HBF Member Plus Optical provider.
How do I submit a claim for my glasses/contacts?
Most providers give you the option to claim electronically via a system called HICAPS or another called Smart Health. To do this, simply swipe your HBF member card when you pay and HBF will pay the provider on-the-spot. All you will need to pay is the ‘gap‘; this is the difference between what your provider charges and the benefit that HBF pays on your behalf.
Alternatively, or if you purchase online, you can pay for your glasses or contacts in full and submit your invoices and receipts to HBF by one of the following methods:
- Opening the HBF App
- Logging in to myHBF
- Visiting your nearest branch
- Returning a claim form by mail to HBF, GPO Box 1440, Perth WA 6845
