Taking on the Specsavers 12km at HBF Run for a Reason challenges more than your legs. When you lace up for a long run, whether it’s 12km or just pushing past your usual limit, your legs aren’t the only things putting in the hard yards.

According to Specsavers Optometrist, Dr Ambhruni Padhye, there are many benefits to our eyesight beyond the finish line.

Here’s what’s really happening with your eyesight while you run, plus the top tips for keeping your eyes in peak condition.

1. Running improves blood circulation, keeping your eyes fuelled

We don’t often think about our circulatory system beyond how it supports muscles and endurance, but it plays a vital role in eye health too. Running increases overall blood circulation, including blood flow to the eyes.

“The retina is one of the highest metabolically active tissues in the body and requires a constant, high energy blood supply to function,” explains Dr Padhye. “Over the course of a 12km run, increased circulation helps meet the demands your eyes need, supporting their responsiveness and effectiveness as you move.”

2. Running reduces eye strain through time outdoors

Between work, screen time and everyday tasks, many of us don’t realise how much eye strain we’re carrying. Running outdoors offers a simple and natural reset.

Spending time outdoors while running or exercising helps reduce eye strain,” says Dr Padhye. “Many of us spend long hours looking at screens, which can cause our eyes to feel tired and irritated. Taking regular breaks and getting outdoors is ideal to combat this.”

Time outside gives your eyes a break from digital screens and prolonged near focus tasks, allowing eye muscles to relax and easing irritation.

3. Running supports your vision through healthier lifestyle choices

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle comes with benefits beyond fitness alone, including long term eye health. In Australia, diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of preventable blindness, caused by damage to the blood vessels in the retina. Regular exercise, along with a balanced diet, isn’t just about performance; it’s an investment in your overall health.

A 12km run challenges your endurance, strength and focus, and your eyes are right there with you every step of the way. So next time you’re planning your training, remember: don’t let your eyes feel the fatigue. It's easy to book an eye check with Specsavers, and your vision will thank you for it.
