Partnering with global investment firm Artesian for fund management services, HBF Ventures’ mandate is to invest in early and growth stage companies developing digital health tools, new models of care, preventative health services and technologies designed to strengthen the sustainability of Australia’s health system.

HBF Ventures has been established with funds from HBF’s existing investment portfolio and is expected to run for 10 years.

HBF CEO Dr Lachlan Henderson said the initiative represented an investment in member health and wellbeing by giving HBF early visibility of, and greater scope to support emerging technologies and care models.

“Healthcare models are always changing, and we want to support innovations that have the potential to make care more accessible, effective, and sustainable for our members into the future,” Dr Henderson said.

“Partnering with Artesian, HBF is focused on identifying and enabling innovative companies reach their potential to create better experiences and health outcomes for our members.”

HBF Chief Information and Transformation Officer, Sanjeev Gupta, who is the operational lead for HBF Ventures, said the fund gives HBF visibility of emerging innovative solutions that can reshape how care is delivered.

“Digital health is evolving at pace, with AI, advanced analytics and new models creating opportunities to dramatically improve how members navigate and experience care.

“HBF Ventures allows us to work closely with founders building secure, scalable solutions that address real challenges across the health system. We’re committed to supporting solutions that deliver measurable value for members and strengthen the future of care in Australia,” Mr Gupta said.

Artesian Managing Partner and CEO Jeremy Colless said, “HBF Ventures represents a strong alignment between long-term capital, deep sector insight and a clear member-first purpose.

“Through our Venture Capital as a Service partnership with HBF, we’re excited to work alongside the HBF team to back founders building scalable solutions that can deliver impact for members and the broader Australian health ecosystem.”

HBF Ventures will focus on technologies and services that deliver direct benefits for members, including:

  • Digital health solutions that make care more convenient and coordinated
  • New approaches to healthcare delivery that improve access and affordability
  • Preventative and population health solutions that help members stay well
  • Innovations that enhance service and member experience
  • Adjacent developments that strengthen the broader health and wellbeing ecosystem

The fund is expected to make between 15 and 20 investments over its life, giving HBF early insight into emerging trends across the health sector. The pipeline of new ideas will help HBF respond to changing member needs and broader industry pressures.

Portfolio companies may also benefit from access to HBF’s healthcare network and expertise, helping to strengthen Australia’s health innovation landscape.
