Obesity is one of the most common risk factors for obstructive sleep apnoea. Other risk factors include ageing, being born with a narrow throat, facial bone shape and large tonsils*.

* Sleep Health Foundation (2011)

Obstructive sleep apnoea is diagnosed with a sleep study. A home sleep study uses a portable device to monitor and record your sleep, breathing and oxygen levels. The device will generate a comprehensive report which is reviewed by a qualified sleep physician. Your pharmacist will then schedule a time to inform your diagnosis and discuss next steps.

HBF does not pay a benefit towards take home sleep studies. However, if diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnoea, you may require continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy. If required, eligible HBF health members may receive benefits payable on the cost of a CPAP therapy machine*.
