Running groups major mental health benefits

While raising money for vital charities may be at the heart of HBF Run for a Reason, we’re also in it for the spirit. And there is no better showcase of spirit than 37,000 people filling the streets of Perth with unmatchable energy. You see, there’s something about running in a group that not only motivates people to keep pushing but also gets those happy hormones harmonising. So, with this in mind, let’s talk about the mental health benefits fuelling running groups – and showcase some of Perth’s best.
Before we begin though, it’s time to curb the idea that running groups are only for serious runners. Those doing more miles often find a balance between group and solo training but running groups are for everyone to benefit from – and there are so many across Perth who welcome all ages and abilities. Whether you’re looking to smash your PB or complete the Commbank 3km with your kids beside you – a community running group could be a supportive environment that not only motivates you to regularly challenge yourself and improve your mental health but also sets the foundation for friendship and comradery, especially if you’re training for an event like HBF Run for a Reason.
HBF Run for a Reason sponsor Commbank are big believers in the power of coming together – whether that be as a community for the Commbank 3km or as a running group, so in the leadup to Sunday 25 May we’ve put together a list of mental health benefits, as well as some running groups around Perth, free and welcoming to all.
Looking for the ultimate group boost? See you Sunday 25 May, for HBF Run for a Reason 2025.
The possible (major) mental health benefits of running in a group
- Support in numbers: Finding like-minded people to share an experience with, especially exercise, is wonderful for your mental health. It’s as simple and sweaty as that.
- Stress relief thanks to Endorphin release: Running itself triggers the release of endorphins, which are chemicals in the brain that promote feelings of happiness and reduce stress. When done in a group, this effect can be amplified, as the shared experience of overcoming physical challenges together enhances feelings of well-being and reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression.
- More motivation: Picture this, the sky is grey, your muscles are feeling tired from that hill you tackled yesterday, and the couch is calling – enter your running group. They’re here to get you through those days where it all feels a bit hard, because the feedback is that nobody regrets exercise and you and your running group buddies are all in it together. That feels good.
- Confidence boost: Something as simple as a confidence boost may set you up for a day of increased productivity and a running group may be just that. Setting you up in an environment where you’re likely to push a little harder than you might solo, there is a wonderful chance you’ll leave each session feeling pretty chuffed with yourself.
- Friendship: If you’re someone finding it hard to catch up with busy mates, or maybe looking for new connections, a running group could be the perfect solution to social struggles. Because friendship is so important for our mental health, and running groups understand the brief.
